Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) Strike

The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) has notified Allina Health that it intends to hold a strike from 7 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 11, to 7 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 31, at the following hospitals:

Patient care is our top priority. In the event of a strike, these hospitals will remain open and be staffed by qualified nurses who will provide safe, quality care.

We remain committed to reaching an agreement with the union that reflects the valuable contributions of our nurses.

Frequently asked questions for patients and visitors

No. The strike notice applies only to Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Mercy Hospital – Unity Campus and United Hospital’s St. Paul campus. Allina Health surgery centers, clinics, urgent care centers and other sites are not affected by the strike notice.

Please note that you may encounter extended wait times at our urgent care centers and hospital emergency departments due to the sharp increase in patients with influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other seasonal illnesses. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any frustration or inconvenience you may experience as we work to provide care to everyone who needs it.

Please assume that your care will go ahead as planned during the strike. If we need to make a change to the date, time or location of your scheduled care, we’ll contact you directly.

Our physicians and other non-nurse staff members will be working as scheduled. Not all of our employed nurses will be striking. We will also have fully qualified temporary nurses working throughout the strike.

Yes. Our visitor policies will remain the same during the strike.

There will be no changes to the hospital entrances or parking facilities during the strike. Please follow any directions you received when your care was scheduled. Emergency Department entrances and parking facilities will be open 24/7 as usual.

If a strike occurs, we expect that striking nurses will picket outside. They are not permitted to interfere with patients and visitors arriving at the hospital. Our security teams will be present to ensure everyone’s safety.
