Student preparation

To help emerging providers and clinicians grow their skills, we offer more than 5,000 clinical rotations each year in areas such as Advanced Practice, Allied Health, Nursing + more!

  1. Allina Health only accepts students from schools that have an active Clinical Experience Agreement between the Academic Affiliation and Allina Health.
  2. Background study: Allina Health requires the Minnesota or Wisconsin DHS (based on clinical location(s)) for all clinical students.
    • The school must open an account with the MN DHS in order to request background studies for clinical students

  3. Immunizations: All students and onsite faculty, including Allina Health employees, must meet the Allina Health student requirements for immunizations:
  4. Must comply with Allina Health's Clinical Request & Approval Processes
  5. Must complete all requirements in Allina Health's Clinical Onboarding Processes

    • Placements must be approved by the Allina Health unit manager
  3. Advanced Practice RN/PA
    • All APRN faculty must have a current MN Nursing License. The preceptor is not the faculty
  4. APRN (MS, DNP, CNS, etc)/PA project placement
    • The project request form must be submitted and formally approved before inquiry/planning or onboarding starts

Additional resources:

  1. Allina Health employees - It is required that the experience/preceptor is outside of the Allina Health employed unit
  2. Observation, shadow or tour - At this time, Allina Health does not provide career exploration observation or shadowing experiences for students. Requests must go through site HR and receive approval.
    • A temporary, unpaid exposure to the workplace in an occupational area of interest.
    • This may include students enrolled in medical school who are not engaged in a clinical training program.
    • Elementary/Middle/High School students are not permitted to observe the provider-patient interaction or to enter certain areas of the facility when patients are present

Once a clinical experience has been approved, the school must submit a preliminary roster to the appropriate Allina Health Academic Coordinators to initiate the onboarding process.
