Role of partners

One of your many roles as a partner is to help your partner adjust to life as a new parent. This can be challenging with so much change and transition. Here are some things that may be helpful:

  • Building a solid bond and attachment with baby is important and will develop over time. Initial bonding is generally done through feedings, holding the baby and responding to their needs.
  • Self-care, such as regular eating and getting enough rest, is important for you. Take naps and practice good relaxation techniques.

It is normal to feel uncertain about your new role or left out, however this will change over time as you adjust to the baby and the changes within your family. Reaching out to other parents can provide good support,

This section covers topics relevant to your relationship with your partner during and after pregnancy:

  • communicating with your partner
  • what your partner might need from you during pregnancy
  • sexuality during pregnancy
  • your partner's emotions
