RN new graduate

More than just a job. Caring is a calling. We are hiring new graduates for a wide variety of units across our 12 hospital campuses. More information below.

Allina Health is dedicated to supporting our new graduate RNs with a precepted orientation and New Grad Nurse Residency Program during the transition from student to professional nurse. The Residency Program is 24 hours of classroom content over a six-month period. This program aims to create a sense of community by bringing individuals together to discuss key areas of professional nursing practice including Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice, Information Technology, Clinical Ethics, Wellbeing, Conflict Resolution, Culture of Safety and Quality Improvement, and is brought to our residents from key team members across the system.

Allina is committed to supporting the professional development of nurses by creating transformational programs including New Graduate Nurse Residency, Mentoring, Preceptor Development, Clinical Education, Nursing Grand Rounds, Wellbeing programs and a variety of other opportunities. A portion of your orientation will be at our state-of-the art MacMillan Conferencing Center and our brand new Vanderboom Simulation Center, which provides hands-on simulation-based learning for intraprofessional teams systemwide and features 8 skills bays, 5 simulation rooms, 4 debriefing spaces and more. There are options for new grad involvement in system initiatives, committees and being a future preceptor for nursing students or summer nurse interns.

Pay for RNs in the hospital follows the union step scale which factors in degree and length of service. Specifics around pay including shift differentials etc. would be discussed at the time of job offer.

We are an organization committed to diversity, equity, inclusion & belonging, a not-for-profit, women-led health care system and one of the largest employers in Minnesota with 27,000+ employees. When you join our team, you will have access to valuable employee benefits that support the total well-being – mind, body, spirit and community – of you and your family.

Our 12 hospital campuses (below) often hire new grad RNs in the following units: medical surgical, cardiac telemetry, vascular, oncology, neuroscience, orthopedics, spine, inpatient physical rehabilitation, short stay observation, mental health, ICU stepdown/progressive care units and float pool. Our intensive care units, emergency departments and mother baby areas also hire new grads typically with experience in those areas depending on position availability. Surgical services may on occasion hire new nurses with a strong passion for that area of nursing. Our hospitals primarily serve the adult patient populations, so we do not have Neonatal, Pediatrics or Special Care Nursery units within the Allina hospital system. For new graduates looking for straight day shifts – our home care division is hiring with flexible FTE options. The clinics, urgent care and hospice settings within Allina rarely hire new graduate nurses.

The work schedule details are determined during the job offer and are dependent on what positions are available at that time. You would interview and be considered for all work schedule availabilities. Straight night shifts (11:00 PM-7:30 AM) or a day/night rotation are often available for new grads, straight evening or day/evening positions are possible depending on openings. 8-hour shifts working every other weekend is most common for new nurses, but sometimes there are positions for 12-hour shifts every 3rd weekend available as well. A 0.8 FTE is typical which is 64 hours in a 2-week pay period, but there may be positions that are 0.6-0.9.

We define a new graduate as a registered nurse with less than 1 year of RN work experience. We have one streamlined application for new grads: RN New Graduate Application (#R-0000016). On the application there will be an area to indicate preferences for location and patient care area. By applying, you will be considered for all RN positions within the Allina system that hire new grads. We invite you to submit your application prior to graduation, but encourage you to apply whenever it feels most right to you. We hire and start new graduates year-round. Once an application is received, we will review in further detail and you will be contacted directly by our Talent Acquisition Team. Offers are often received prior to graduation, and would be contingent upon successfully passing the NCLEX, background checks, etc. A RN license is required prior to starting. RNs with greater than 1 year of RN work experience apply directly to positions.

We invest in our employees with resources to help them grow and thrive – not only as a professional, but also as a whole person with well-being resources, discounts, tuition reimbursement and more.
