[MUSIC PLAYING] The core of nursing always remains the same. It's compassion. It's still the human touch and the human interaction that is at the core of nursing. Advocating can be really hard. It may not be what I would choose-- what is safest for them, what works. We're given the opportunity to be autonomous, to be creative with our position. You have the support of the senior leadership and your direct manager-- is what makes me able to be a leader at what I do. So how do you stop that moment, and how do you show that compassion or the caring because is it any less important than any one of those tasks? No. It's the team that drives the quality. As long as the nurses have the information, and it makes sense, then nurses will do the job. To just be able to pull in all that new stuff to make things better, just to keep up on it and to keep encouraging my coworkers. From everybody-- from the person who greets him at the desk through the people who are cleaning their rooms-- I mean, it's a teamwork, and I like where we're going. There's something new every day or change every day. It's OK not to know everything but just to try to keep updated or even update your coworkers on what's changing so that we can all work together and all be the team to get the job done. They don't care that you've got seven or eight different cases that day or that you've got two or three clients. For them, it's a moment. It's that moment where you have to show them that you're there for them and that you're their advocate and that you're there to deliver that high-quality care. I knew Jane. I started about the same time she started. And she was feisty and fun and had such a passion. I just really liked when the student nurses came because nurses weren't nice to me when I was a student, so I wanted to be nice to them. So she saw that and just nurtured that in me. When you look at preventing falls, or when you're looking at MRSA or just anything, it's the team that drives the quality. United is a leader in obstetrical care. That gives me great pride. I also was very surprised and honored. After my mother passed away, I really, really appreciated the volunteers that came in with my mom, and so I was really interested in doing that myself. I went into it thinking I was really going to be helping others, hopefully giving them that kind of peace of mind or a little calmness when things are kind of difficult at the end of life. But I also have taken away a lot of calmness and quietness for myself too. Sometimes here, it gets so busy that you don't get a chance to really sit and listen and just talk to patients. My mother was a nurse, and my father was a physician. Biology and chemistry-- those always interested me and the way that a human body ticks. I like to be outside-- biking and tried my hand at Rollerblading, though I don't look very good in all the protective gear. Yeah. I don't think I could do anything else. Being a nurse at United can be challenging, frustrating, rewarding, fun, sad. It's just all a mixture of so many things. [? I mean, ?] is there any other profession where you get hugs every day from your patients, or you can also get a tray thrown at you by your patients. There's patients who just are so grateful. Hand squeezes that are just like beyond what you can imagine. I mean, what other profession can you do that? I don't think I've ever had a day where I haven't not wanted to come to work. I just loved people. I had a sister who was a few years older than me and was kind of trying to decide, and I told her let's be nurses. We actually went to nursing school together, graduated together. She works in the NICU at Children's, and we've been working in the birth center for about the same amount of time. And I have a daughter that's going to be a nurse. It's those difficult patients, though-- those are the ones that you usually remember-- the challenging patients that bring out the best in you. Being a support for each other. Someone you're working with is having a bad day-- to pitch in there and help them. I mean, just sometimes someone doing just a few things for you will get you through. Cry and laugh together-- with patients and with staff. And we could have every nurse receive an award like what we have. I see it in their practice. To be part of that is just-- it's amazing, and that's my lifelong work. Sometimes it is a little hard to come to work. I really always enjoy the staff that I work with. That's one of the big things for me. I always like the patients and the changing of patients. Things do change pretty quickly [INAUDIBLE]. That's kind of what [? filled that ?] for me. And I like to go to McGovern's after work. No. I'm just kidding. [LAUGHTER] There you go. Somebody had to throw it in there. No. I'm kidding. Again.
