PGY1 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy

The PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. 

Program Goals

The goal for each of our pharmacy residents is to graduate with:

  • greater clinic knowledge and confidence to care for patients
  • increased compassion and empathy for those we serve
  • the ability to communicate effectively with both patients and colleagues
  • experience teaching students, patients and healthcare professionals
  • an understanding of how to manage a pharmacy practice with focus on continual practice improvement

Staffing – 80 Hours

Elective Learning Experiences

Geriatrics – 4 Weeks

  • Complex Care for Seniors team care in patient homes
  • Hospice pharmacy care
  • Pharmacy consulting for transitional and long-term care facilities
  • Patient education through Stepping On program

Advanced Heart Failure Clinic –  4 Weeks

  • Work as pharmacist on cardiology team to manage patients with advanced heart failure
  • Provide education classes to patients 

Staffing

Residents are able to gain valuable experience in the Allina Health retail pharmacy located in the Allina Health Apple Valley Clinic. Within this staffing role, residents are able to better understand what patients experience after prescriptions leave the clinic. Allina Health Pharmacy has kind, supportive staff and the rotation has been a great experience for residents. Staffing occurs during weekdays for a total of 80 hours in the fall. Residents have the option for additional weekend hours at the pharmacy as a float pharmacist.
