Retirement, reimagined: Former Allina Health employees return as volunteers

[Allina Health Newsroom, April 10, 2026] When employees retire from Allina Health, many find they miss being around patients and the sense of purpose that comes from caring for others.

“I’m a people person,” said Kris Coleman, a former Allina Health manager. “When I retired, the hardest part was, ‘Where are the people?’”

After 33 years with Allina Health, Kris is back — this time wearing a black volunteer vest in a role that keeps her active while supporting Allina Health United Hospital in St. Paul.

"I’m definitely getting in my steps,” Kris said with a smile. “I get to jump into action here.”

Mary Detviler also jumped back into action at United Hospital.

“I worked at Allina Health for 35 years in labor and delivery,” she said. “I loved what I did, and I feel very satisfied and happy when I’m able to come here and volunteer.”

Volunteer Deb Diko returned after nearly three decades in the hospital lab. Now, she helps with guest services and other needs around the campus.

“Delivering flowers is really fun,” Deb said. “My favorite thing is helping patients and their family members find their way through the campus.”

Deb, Kris and Mary all say the switch from employee to volunteer was easy, thanks to the Volunteer Services team.

“It can be seamless, especially if you do it within a few months after you've retired,” Deb said.

“You get signed up and you’re pretty much off and running,” added Kris.

And she adds that she knows exactly where to run. “I know pretty much every nook and cranny of this hospital, so that's very helpful.”

Everyone agrees that it feels good to be back and reconnect with the hospital community and its mission to care for people.

“At the end of my shift, I know I have helped my care team, and I know I have helped patients,” Mary said. “It's a day well spent.”
