Allina Health and Mortenson celebrate “topping off” of the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital

[KMSP Fox 9 News, May 13, 2025] Allina Health held the “topping off” ceremony for the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The event celebrates the final beam placement, marking the end of structural work on the building and a major milestone in the Abbott Northwestern Revitalization project.

Construction workers participated in a ceremonial signing of the final beam, as leaders discussed the project’s significance in the future care of the community. At ten stories tall and more than half a million square feet, the new building will feature future-flexible operating rooms to support emerging technology and tech-enabled patient rooms designed for accessibility and comfort.

Allina Health Foundation’s generous donors have made the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Revitalization project possible, including Richard M. Schulze who donated $25 million.

Abbott Northwestern Hospital has called Minneapolis home for more than 140 years. The Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital is scheduled to be open to patients in the fall of 2026. Watch video of the “topping off” ceremony below.
