Is hoarding on the rise?

Thousands of people struggle with hoarding, and in extreme cases it can lead to dangerous conditions. United Press International, also known as UPI, reports that experts are seeing a greater emphasis on hoarding since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. A reporter from UPI reached out to Allina Health psychologist David Nathan, PsyD LP to talk about hoarding and the factors that contribute to it.

"As the pandemic was a very difficult experience for all involved, we saw increased rates of all stress reactions, and that includes increases in hoarding behaviors," Nathan said. "Treatment helps patients understand what is going on in their mind that connects 'safety' with having these possessions, and the therapist/caregiver can help the patient find other ways to feel safe and comfortable without needing to keep all of these possessions."
