Our community commitment
Abbott Northwestern Hospital has been deeply rooted in the South Minneapolis community for over 138 years.
Right now, our communities are hurting from the impacts of the coronavirus as well as the injustices, inequities and safety challenges facing our neighborhood. Our mission to relieve suffering and to provide care is more critical than ever.
As we begin improvements to our hospital, our Whole Way to Better commitment includes continued dedication to our neighbors.
We are committed to investing in our current location.
In 2017, Allina Health signed a 20-year extension of our lease in the Midtown Exchange building, continuing our commitment to the Phillips neighborhood. To meet the changing needs of our community and increase our ability to offer complex care, we will also improve the Abbott Northwestern Hospital campus over the next 10 years.
Some of our neighbors are helping to build the next era of ground-breaking patient care at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. They are part of the Community Workforce Program we created with Mortenson. Through meaningful craftworker jobs, those living in our neighboring communities are helping us make our great hospital even better. The new Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center opens in fall 2026.
We will keep our promise to stay within our current campus footprint.
Many years ago, Abbott Northwestern made a covenant with the neighborhood—we will not expand our campus beyond our current boundaries. Abbott Northwestern will keep this promise in our future campus development plans.

Our projects are guided by environmental sustainability and equity.
Campus Revitalization Program Guidelines include:
- Respect the people of the Phillips neighborhood and all others affected by Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Allina Health as a whole.
- Put patient care at the core of all decisions.
- Minimize the environmental impact of hospital operations.
- Create work opportunities for our local community by contracting with Minority & Women Owned Business Enterprises (WMBE).
