Could mammograms help doctors identify heart disease risk in women? Retu Saxena, MD, a cardiologist with Allina Health Minneapolis Heart Institute and a researcher with Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, is conducting a study to find the answer.
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. Early detection is critical because women can make lifestyle changes that could drastically reduce their chances of having a stroke or heart attack.
We know women are getting mammograms to screen for breast cancer. Mammogram images also show breast arterial calcification, which can be helpful in determining a woman's risk for heart disease.
