Cardiac rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is one program designed to help individuals with heart disease improve their lifestyle through exercise, education and counseling. Allina Health United Hospital – Hastings Regina Campus's Cardiac Rehab program is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Exercise

The exercise program consists of progressive aerobic exercise using treadmills, cycles, weights and nu-steppers. Sessions are closely monitored by an Occupational Therapist, an Exercise Physiologist and/or a Registered Nurse. Emphasis is placed on efficient cardiovascular and muscular conditioning. 

Education and Counseling

Education is focused on heart disease, its causes, treatment and prevention. A goal of the program is to reduce the risk of further heart problems and counsel participants about healthy lifestyle changes.

Who is Eligible?

Individuals must obtain a referral from their physician to participate in the program. People with the following conditions may be eligible to participate in cardiac rehabilitation:

  • angina
  • heart attack
  • coronary angioplasty
  • coronary stents
  • heart surgery
