What to expect

what to expect during your orthopedic surgery

Support at each step

Your journey to recovery begins here. It’s our hope that you feel a part of your care during the entire experience. Our surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, operating room nurses and rehabilitation team are here to support you from the day of surgery, through recovery, and after you leave the hospital.

Day of surgery

A nurse will meet with you to complete your care plan and review what you can expect before and after your surgery. The nurse will also review your health history, and you will be asked questions about any allergies you have and medicines you are taking.

Lab and other tests will be done before your surgery. When you go into surgery, your family will be taken to the waiting room. The surgeon will talk with your family when surgery is done.

What to expect after surgery

Right after surgery, you will be taken to a recovery room. You will spend 45 minutes to two hours [or longer, depending on how your surgery went] in a recovery room, where nurses will monitor you closely. Your surgeon will talk to your family when your surgery is over.

Discharge instructions

Understanding and remembering all the information you need to know after being discharged from a hospital after surgery can be confusing. My Account provides online access once you get home to view your discharge instructions, refill a prescription and more.

Customized after-care

Your care team will work with you and your family to develop a personalized discharge and home care plan that includes outpatient therapy, pain management and arranging for home medical equipment, such as a walker or cane.
