Sweet spiced pastry squares

There’s built-in portion control in these sweet and spicy squares! Enjoy four of them for a perfectly portioned end to your meal.

Ingredients

nonstick cooking spray
2 tablespoons packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
all-purpose flour (for flouring countertop)
4 sheets phyllo dough
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.
  2. In a small bowl, combine first 6 ingredients. Stir until well-blended.
  3. Lightly flour the counter top (or pastry board). Place 4 stacked sheets of phyllo dough on the counter. Brush melted butter on top of phyllo dough. Then sprinkle brown sugar-spice mixture on top.
  4. Using a pastry or pizza cutter, slice dough into 2-inch squares. (You may have extra dough, which you can use to make extra squares if you wish.) Place squares on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes or until squares are light golden-brown.
  5. Allow to cool slightly and enjoy warm.

Making this recipe as a family is a great way to practice fractions with the kids! You can show them how the spices measure out to 1 teaspoon (1/2 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 1) as you add each to the bowl with the brown sugar.
