Red cinnamon candy gelatin dessert

Using unsweetened applesauce in this recipe instead of regular applesauce cuts down on the amount of sugar without sacrificing the added texture.


2 cups water
1 cup red cinnamon candies
2 3-ounce boxes red gelatin (You can use strawberry or cherry flavor.)
4 cups unsweetened applesauce
fresh basil, for garnish


  1. In a large saucepan, bring 2 cups water to a light boil. Add cinnamon candies. Stir until dissolved.
  2. Add both boxes of red gelatin. Stir until dissolved. Remove from heat.
  3. Add applesauce and mix well.
  4. Pour into a 9-by-13-inch cake pan. Place in refrigerator until set firm (about 2 to 3 hours).
  5. Garnish dessert with fresh basil. Serve chilled.

Covering the gelatin in the refrigerator will prevent a thick, rubbery skin from forming over the top of the dessert.
