Navigating medical misinformation on social media while keeping patients at the center

[KARE 11 News, May 19, 2026] A third of Americans get their medical information from social media and AI chatbots, according to the Pew Research Center. For many people, the information is free and easy to access. Unfortunately, that information may not be correct. It may be medical misinformation (false information spread without intent to deceive) or disinformation (false information spread with the intent to mislead the public).

 The proliferation of medical misinformation and disinformation is changing the doctor-patient relationship. Allina Health family medicine and obstetrics physician Rose Marie Leslie, MD, spoke to KARE 11 News about how she works to combat the spread of misinformation while ensuring her patients feel heard and included in care decisions.
