Colleagues gathered to recognize Martin’s decades-long commitment to patient care and her lasting impact on the Faribault community.
Martin began her career as a nursing aide while preparing for nursing school. She later completed a one-year program at the former Faribault School of Practical Nursing, launching a career that would span generations of patients and major advancements in health care.
“I started as a nursing aide right out of high school and then entered the LPN program here in Faribault,” Martin said.
Martin was a licensed practical nurse for 35 years before becoming a registered nurse (RN).
Over six decades, Martin witnessed significant changes, particularly in technology. Care team members say her commitment to compassionate, hands-on care has remained constant.
“Lee’s 60 years of service reflect a deep, unwavering commitment to patients,” said Amie Fox, Surgical Services Manager at Allina Health Owatonna Hospital and Faribault Medical Center. “She has been a steady presence for the community and for the care team members who value her experience and giving nature.”
Martin is known not only for her clinical expertise, but for the connections she has built with patients over time. Many have returned years later and recognized her, sharing how her care helped them through difficult moments.
“They thank me for being kind and for taking the time to explain things when they were scared,” Martin said. “That’s what has kept me going all these years.”
She has also used her own lived experience to support patients, including helping them better understand procedures and what to expect during care.
Those who have worked alongside Martin describe her as a mentor and role model, setting the standard for teamwork, compassion and dedication.
As healthcare continues to evolve, Martin’s 60-year tenure stands as a reminder of the enduring importance of relationships and compassionate care.
For Martin, the focus remains on the patients she has served.
“They are why I have worked and why I continue to care,” she said.
