Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, even though it is the least common. Protecting your skin is important at every age. Laura Oakes with WCCO Radio interviewed Allina Health dermatologist Elizabeth Farhat, MD, about skin cancer, melanoma, risk factors and prevention.
During the conversation, Dr. Farhat reminded listeners about the importance of applying and reapplying sunscreen, wearing sun-protective clothing and understanding how much sun exposure people get while in the car.
Here’s an excerpt from the article:
“If you’re going to be out in the sun and you’re using your phone — as we all have our cell phones and tablets — those surfaces are reflective,” Farhat said. “They can reflect sunlight, which increases overall sun exposure.”
Dr. Farhat also noted that sun damage is cumulative and may take years to appear, showing up later as wrinkles, dark spots or even skin cancer.
