“Code Hope allows interdisciplinary staff to come together to talk about hard situations at the bedside,” said Lexie Hille, DNP, RN, clinical program specialist.
It creates a moment to pause and process things that can happen during a shift, including the unexpected passing of a patient.
In a quick meeting, a trained facilitator leads participants through a specific protocol. Those who attend are encouraged to think back on or speak about a difficult situation.
“Code Hope is definitely one of the most effective ways that I’ve seen to build a culture of comradery,” said Brianna Thompson, BSN, RN, NE-BC, a patient care services manager.
Feedback indicates Code Hope works. When asked, 94% of participants said they felt more supported and had less stress following a meeting.
“We have to care about our teams for them to care about those that we serve,” said Laura Randgaard, RN, MA, NE-BC, vice president of patient care services. “Code Hope represents that."
