Code Hope: A time for care team members to come together

[Allina Health Newsroom, May 02, 2025] Team members at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, jointly owned by Allina Health, Park Nicollet Health Services and Essentia Health, have come up with a way to ensure people who care for patients also take a moment to care for themselves.

“Code Hope allows interdisciplinary staff to come together to talk about hard situations at the bedside,” said Lexie Hille, DNP, RN, clinical program specialist.

It creates a moment to pause and process things that can happen during a shift, including the unexpected passing of a patient.

In a quick meeting, a trained facilitator leads participants through a specific protocol. Those who attend are encouraged to think back on or speak about a difficult situation.

“Code Hope is definitely one of the most effective ways that I’ve seen to build a culture of comradery,” said Brianna Thompson, BSN, RN, NE-BC, a patient care services manager.

Feedback indicates Code Hope works. When asked, 94% of participants said they felt more supported and had less stress following a meeting.

“We have to care about our teams for them to care about those that we serve,” said Laura Randgaard, RN, MA, NE-BC, vice president of patient care services. “Code Hope represents that."
