Preventing youth sports injuries

[WCCO-TV News, August 28, 2023] Young athletes are busy with fall sports once again. We want our student athletes to thrive in sports and avoid injuries as much as possible. Allina Health’s Robby Bershow, MD joined WCCO-TV’s Mid-Morning Show to talk about strains, sprains and concussions, as well as the impact of focusing on one sport year-round.

Dr. Bershow shared three main tips with young athletes and their parents.

  1. Don’t play through pain.
  2. Give your body a chance to rest and recover.
  3. Try to take a month break from your favorite sport. Dr. Bershow says our bodies are designed to move in different ways. Switching up the activities decreases the amount of stress and strain on certain parts of our bodies.
