Icy conditions increase risk of slips and falls

[KARE 11, February 27, 2023] Slick roads, parking lots and sidewalks can lead to slips, trips and falls and sometimes injuries. Erin Vesey, physical therapist with Allina Health Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, spoke with KARE 11 about ways to avoid a fall and common injuries associated with weather-related falls.

One of the injuries that may occur during a slip on the ice is a concussion. Here’s some information to keep in mind if you think you or someone you know may have a concussion.

  • You don’t have to hit your head to get a concussion. Any type of impact that causes a whiplash effect to your head and/or neck can cause a concussion.
  • Loss of consciousness only happens 10 percent of times.
  • It can take a few hours for symptoms to develop.
  • Symptoms may include: vomiting, loss of consciousness, seizure, numbness, trouble speaking, headache or dizziness.
