Allina Health unveils Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital

MINNEAPOLIS (July 23, 2026) — Allina Health celebrated the upcoming opening of the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, marking the completion of the largest infrastructure project in the organization’s history. The new facility will expand critical care capacity, advance surgical care and enhance the patient and family experience through modern care environments and advanced technology.

The 620,000-square-foot center includes 190 private patient rooms, advanced surgical suites and a 27,000-square-foot rooftop healing garden designed to support patients, families and care team members. The facility will begin caring for patients on Aug. 29, 2026.

The new center was designed to meet growing demand for highly specialized care and support the future of health care delivery through investments in technology, workforce support and modern patient care environments. The facility will support complex heart, cancer, brain and spine care while increasing critical care capacity for the region.

Located on the Abbott Northwestern Hospital campus, the center was designed in collaboration with physicians, nurses, care team members, patients and families to create spaces that support exceptional care and a better patient experience. Mortenson served as construction manager for the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center, which was designed by HGA.
