MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Jan. 19, 2023) — Allina Health is pleased to announce the newly named Complex Hernia Program which has experts to repair the most common hernia types, as well as more complex cases that require a surgeon with advanced training.
A hernia happens when fatty tissue or an organ breaks through weakened muscle or tissue in your abdominal wall. A complex hernia often occurs at the site of a previous hernia repair. Hernia surgeries also become complex if a prior repair left surgical mesh behind or if the mesh created an abnormal connection between two body parts.
“Whether you are a candidate for a less invasive robotic procedure, a more intensive reconstructive surgery or a combination of both approaches, we have a multispecialty care team,” said Christopher Macomber, MD, medical director, Allina Health Complex Hernia Program.
Brian Frandrup, 38, of Hastings, Minn., had a complex hernia repair at Allina Health in fall of 2022.
“For the first time since I can remember, I can feel the muscles in my abdominal area. Before the repair I was self-conscious about how my stomach looked, even in clothing, so I always wore oversized shirts and noticed people looking at my stomach. Now, I don’t worry about that,” said Frandrup. “I decided it was time to take ownership of my life. To have the surgery, I took the recommended steps of losing weight and quitting smoking. Recently I’ve been going to the gym. I feel better overall.”
