Allina Health celebrates future of Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Groundbreaking event honored $25 million leadership gift by Richard M. Schulze and Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation

MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 14, 2023) — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey declared September 14, 2023, Abbott Northwestern Hospital Day. Allina Health broke ground on the future of Abbott Northwestern Hospital today. Nationally recognized Abbott Northwestern Hospital has called Minneapolis home for more than 140 years.

The new building will house the surgical and critical care services on Allina Health’s flagship campus.

“The Abbott Northwestern Hospital campus has evolved and grown since 1887 and our commitment to this community has never wavered,” said Lisa Shannon, president and CEO, Allina Health. “We are creating a sustainable campus for the future that will support advances in health care delivery, meet the needs of our best-in-class workforce and enhance our value to the communities we serve. We are deeply grateful for donors like Richard Schulze and incredible partners like Mortenson.”

The Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation’s $25 million leadership gift is Allina Health’s largest donation to date.

“On behalf of the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, we are honored to be part of a project that will ensure the world-class care Abbott Northwestern Hospital is known for continues for generations to come,” said Richard Schulze, chairman, Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. “One of the focus areas of the foundation is Health & Medicine because investing in exceptional care teams and first-in-class technology benefits all of us.”

At 9 stories tall and more than half a million square feet, the new building will feature future-flexible operating rooms to support emerging technology, tech-enabled patient rooms designed for accessibility and comfort as well as sustainability features to maximize wellbeing and minimize environmental impact. This will be Allina Health’s first LEED-certified building, which is a global standard for efficiency and sustainability. It will also include a beautiful roof-top garden.

“Mortenson and Allina have been working together for more than five decades. Lasting partnerships deliver great results because team work and collaboration are at the center,” said David Mortenson, chairman, Mortenson. “The campus revitalization will be one of the largest projects in the State of Minnesota and its impact will be felt near and far. This project will employ over 1,000 workers over the course of construction and set new standards for diversity and working in the community to recruit, train and develop the next generation of construction professionals into our industry.”

The new facility is scheduled to be open to patients in 2026.
