Cassia joins Allina Health and Presbyterian Homes in ownership of Genevive

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL, MN (February 24, 2021) — Cassia has acquired a minority ownership share in Genevive, complementing the existing ownership of Allina Health and Presbyterian Homes & Services (PHS). Genevive is a geriatric medical practice and care management organization providing comprehensive care for over 7,000 older adults throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota.

This move strengthens Genevive as a progressive model for senior health care delivery between Allina Health, one of the state’s largest non-profit health systems, and Cassia and PHS, two of the largest non-profit providers of senior housing and services.

Genevive CEO Amanda Tufano noted, “The mission of Genevive arose from a vision to establish a practice entirely focused on meeting the needs of older adults. This is an incredible opportunity for us to partner with Cassia and further develop a national model of care for older adults.”

Cassia CEO Bob Dahl states, “We are excited to join Genevive, PHS and Allina Health to advance better care and coordination for older adults. Cassia has a history of partnering with mission-focused organizations that deliver care and services in new and innovative ways. Genevive has truly demonstrated their commitment and expertise with serving older adults during this COVID pandemic through excellent primary care and support with testing and vaccination efforts. We look forward to working with our new partners to expand care and related services for residents and home and community based clients.”

Tufano described, “Genevive’s physicians, nurse practitioners and care coordinators serve older adults with complex needs directly where they live. Genevive, Allina Health and our senior care partners share a commitment to a person-centered approach with services that reflect each person’s strengths, goals, preferences and assessed needs. The COVID pandemic has demonstrated the urgency and value of senior care providers coming together to address the needs and goals of this population as our sole priority.”

For 18 years, Genevive has been a leader in providing care through value-driven Medicare and Medicaid contracting, due largely to their geriatric clinical model designed to serve older adults with complex needs. Genevive has successfully made the leap from fee-for-service to value-based care and has a proven track record of improving quality outcomes.

“We look forward to the opportunity to further leverage and expand access to Genevive’s geriatric comprehensive care model to seniors in Minnesota,” said Ric Magnuson, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Allina Health. “PHS has been a great partner and with Cassia we have the opportunity to take Genevive to the next level of its development in service to seniors.”

“This opportunity is missional,” noted Dan Lindh, President & CEO of PHS, “it helps us meet the societal need for a value-based care model in a focused structure. Organizations like Cassia and PHS provide housing and services that represent a significant portion of the determinants of overall health and Genevive has demonstrated success in bringing exceptional care to older adults through its unique combination of primary care home visits, care management, and value-based contracting.”

Cassia, Allina Health and PHS aim to build on Genevive’s strengths and provide care and services in congregate living settings including independent living, assisted living and longterm care. By accessing advanced payment models available to Medicare populations served through Medicare Advantage (MA), Special Needs Plans (SNPs), and dual eligible seniors served through Minnesota Senior Health Option (MSHO) contracts, the partners will better coordinate health care services traditionally offered by hospitals with those services offered by senior living providers.

Cassia has had a longstanding relationship with Allina Health care teams for many years, built on the trust that comes from the commitment to a similar mission. Allina Health care teams also had a presence at various Augustana Care and Elim Care communities prior to coming together to form Cassia.

“Our mission today is the same as it was in 2003: to treat patients like they are family,” noted Tufano. “We strive to provide the kind of care that we would want our own parents or loved ones to receive. We have an incredible opportunity with Cassia to build on our historical foundation of success and expand in a meaningful and intentional way.”
