Allina Health names Michael Johnston new South Market President

Johnston’s role includes leading Owatonna and District One Hospitals

MINNEAPOLIS (April 21, 2021) — Allina Health has named Michael Johnston as its new South Market President. Johnston will have direct leadership and operational responsibility for District One Hospital, Faribault, Owatonna Hospital, and future growth opportunities in the I-35 corridor. He will assume his new role on May 10, 2021.

Johnston comes to Allina Health from McLaren Health Care in Michigan, where he served as President and CEO of the McLaren Thumb Region. In his role, he oversaw hospitals located in Bad Axe and Caro, Michigan. Throughout his career, Johnston has led many successful initiatives to improve safety, quality, patient satisfaction, and market share. He has also designed and implemented a nationally accredited lean management system. He previously served in executive operations roles at Atrium Health – Charlotte, North Carolina and Trinity Health – Mason City, Iowa.

Johnston holds a bachelor’s degree from Purde University, an MBA from Thomas More College, and a Doctorate of Management from the University of Phoenix. The Johnstons have three children: Kirsten, who is a nurse in Orlando, Fla., Thomas, a computer engineer in Tampa, Fla., and Evie, a junior at Michigan State University.
