Allina Health announces first new ambulatory surgery center as part of five-year strategic growth plan

MINNEAPOLIS (February 25, 2021) — Allina Health, in partnership with Surgical Care Affiliates (SCA), is excited to announce they have leased land in Brooklyn Park on which it will build its first new ambulatory surgery center. Allina Health and SCA announced last year its partnership and intention to operate a network of ambulatory surgery centers throughout the Twin Cities metro in the next five years.

The surgery center will be the core tenant within a larger medical office building being developed by the Davis group, with an expected opening date in early 2022. The 18,000 square foot surgery center with four operating rooms will operate within the joint venture between Allina Health and SCA as well as draw on key partnerships with independent surgeons currently serving patients in the north metro.

Currently, SCA manages the Allina Health WestHealth Surgery Center in Plymouth, Minn. Allina Health and SCA recently acquired majority ownership over three existing ASC locations in Maple Grove, Minneapolis, and Woodbury. The addition of the new ASC planned for Brooklyn Park brings the total number of ASC’s to six with plans to grow in other markets in the near future.

“Investing in multiple ambulatory surgery centers is a critical component to Allina Health’s overall strategy to lower the cost of care for our patients while being responsive to consumer needs. We are positioning Allina Health to be the answer for all of a patient’s surgical care needs, from very complicated heart procedures to a same-day knee replacement.” said Dave Slowinske, Allina Health senior vice president, operations.

Ambulatory surgery centers are seen as a high quality, lower-cost alternative for certain procedures. Over the past few years, a number of health insurers have introduced policy payment structures that direct more patients to outpatient settings for care.

“Our partnership with Surgical Care Affiliates allows us the ability to bring care closer to the many communities we serve,” said Lisa Shannon, Allina Health president and chief operations officer. “Allina Health’s new surgery center in Brooklyn Park is just the first step as we look to expand our footprint and provide quality surgical care and a positive experience closer to our patients’ homes.”
