Internships

Volunteers helpingInternships at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute are offered to students who require a credit-earning internship to complete their undergraduate/graduate degree. All internships are unpaid positions.

Exercise Science

Internships in Exercise Science are year-round for both undergraduate and graduate students attending an accredited Exercise Science/Kinesiology program at universities that currently have an affiliation agreement contract with Allina Health. The internships are 8-15-weeks and are full-time.

  • Activity Based Locomotor Exercise (ABLE) - Golden Valley
Interns learn and participate in all aspects of the ABLE programming. Guided by the ABLE team, interns will gain experience in designing personalized programs for clients using locomotor training, functional and neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and other fitness activities that challenge muscles below the level of injury.
  • Fitness and Aquatics - Golden Valley and Stillwater
  • Sports and Recreation Management - Golden Valley

Therapeutic Recreation

Internships in Therapeutic Recreation are year-round for both undergraduate and graduate students attending an accredited Therapeutic Recreation program at universities that currently have an affiliation agreement contract with Allina Health. The internships are 15 weeks and are full-time. Therapeutic Recreation internships are offered in our:

  • Transitional Rehabilitation Program – Golden Valley
At their own learning pace, over the course of their internship, Therapeutic Recreation interns can expect to feel like a valuable, respected and fully functioning interdisciplinary team member. Interns are involved with over a dozen ongoing programs, ranging from virtual reality/adapted gaming to managing volunteers/logistics of community outings to working with assistive technology, just to name a few.
  • Adaptive Sports & Recreation – Golden Valley
Weekly tasks for interns in our nationally recognized Adaptive Sports and Recreation Department require marketing, registration of participants, equipment inventory, scheduling of facilities and more. We work to provide interns the opportunity to learn and understand adaptive sports, as well as how to create an inclusive community for all to participate. Our participants learn valuable life lessons that help them define themselves around things they do.
  • Aquatics, Fitness and Wellness – Golden Valley and Stillwater
The Aquatics and Fitness Department is composed of two settings; an adaptive fitness center, and a warm-water therapy pool. Interns will have the opportunity to work with individuals of all ability levels in 1:1 and group settings. Alongside the Aquatics and  Fitness specialists, interns will have the opportunity to design workout and wellness programs, teach group fitness classes, observe and assist with client assessments, and other administrative tasks.
