Keeping yourself protected

As with the flu or any other virus, the best ways to avoid coronavirus (COVID-19) are to:

  • Wash your hands often throughout the day. Use soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • If you need to run errands, such as grocery shopping, stay 6 feet apart from others. If you can, use disinfectant wipes on the cart and bring hand sanitizer with you to use on the go. Wash your hands upon returning home.
  • Stay home if you are mildly ill and follow these instructions.
  • If you have severe symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, seek care immediately.
  • If you are older or if you have severe underlying health conditions—like heart disease, lung disease or diabetes—contact your provider right away, even for mild symptoms of a respiratory illness.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Throw away used tissues and wash your hands.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are touched frequently. Use a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
