Job Profile Summary

The Allina Health Administrative Residency Program provides first year master's students with hands-on administrative experience and exposure to current challenges facing health care. The administrative residency allows students to gain unparalleled exposure to a specific department within a multi-disciplinary, complex health care organization. Residents will gain experience through project-based work, partner with preceptors and leadership to understand and develop characteristics of leadership and participate in cross-functional learning within the system. In addition, the residents will have an opportunity to network with current and past Administrative Fellows, colleagues and leaders throughout the organization.

 

Principle Responsibilities

Project Work:

  • Leads and contributes to the work of various strategic goals and projects.
  • Identifies and uses internal and external support resources to accomplish work goals.
  • Offers information and perspectives regarding current trends and issues to stimulate new ideas and thinking.
  • Completes operational improvement initiatives through data collection and analysis.
  • Develops conclusions and implementation plans for projects.
  • Presents findings and implementation plans to appropriate leaders as needed.

Professional Development:

  • Participates in professional/organizational development opportunities.
  • Participates in senior level team meetings.
  • Builds a broad range of healthcare management skills.
  • Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships will all levels of leaders and clinicians throughout the system that enable efficient leadership through complex cross-departmental collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred field of study: healthcare administration, population health, or business administration
  • Currently enrolled in a Masters’ program within healthcare administration, public health, or business administration

 

Structure of the Residency

Orientation

  • An orientation to the mission, philosophy, operational framework and external relationships of the firm is an essential starting place for the orientation of the summer Resident.
  • The student will participate in various meet-and-greet sessions with care team members in the specific area of departmental focus of the resident

 

Main Project

  • The student will be assigned a project with a scope appropriate for completion in the 12 week summer experience.
  • The student is expected to present their findings and recommendations to middle/senior level management at the conclusion of the residency experience

Access to Meetings

  • Regular site visits / ELT lunch & learns
  • The resident may benefit from attendance at a variety of internal and external meetings within the department of focus for the resident
  • The resident may attend meetings to shadow and learn, or to take an active role, depending on the context of the meeting and attendees

 

Additional Information

  • Students will have two preceptors as a regular point of contact (administrative fellow & mid-senior level management)
  • Preceptor may assign side work and projects that will require the student to undertake a search for information, formulate a plan for action and make recommendations, including alternatives
  • Preceptor will provide student the opportunity to receive feedback and discuss progress and challenges facing the organization on a weekly to bi-weekly cadence
  • Students may have the opportunity to shadow various roles/experiences based on their interest
