[New Ulm Journal, April 10, 2017]   Since Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) started back in 2009, people who live and work in New Ulm have made a variety of changes to live a healthier lifestyle and reduce their risk for heart disease. For the past eight years, researchers at The Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation (MHIF) and Allina Health have been tracking health improvements in the community, and in March, researchers presented yet another study showing positive results, particularly with blood pressure and cholesterol control.

The atmosphere quickly turned sour when seven minutes into the game Sleepy Eye’s Brandon Polesky didn’t get up after making a tackle.

[Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch, September 17, 2010]   High schools in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota have teamed up with Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute's Sports Medicine Department at New Ulm Medical Center to do a better job of evaluating head injuries. Over the past month, all athletes in grades 9 to 12 took an ImPACT test (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) which is a computerized neurocognitive assessment instrument that gives doctors and trainers an insight on how someone's brain normally functions.

[Positively Minnesota-DEED, November 06, 2009]   This partnership addresses the serious healthcare worker shortage faced by four rural healthcare facilities in Southern Minnesota – New Ulm Medical Center , Sleepy Eye Medical Center, Madelia Community Hospital and Oak Hills Living Center. South Central College will work with Ridgewater College and Hennepin Technical College to develop curriculum focusing on the needs of 311 existing nursing staff.
