Senator Al Franken Visits Heart of New Ulm Project Screening

[Allina News, August 19, 2009] U.S. Sen. Al Franken made a brief stop at a Heart of New Ulm (HONU) project screening Wednesday, Aug. 19. Franken expressed an interest in learning more about the project from a preventive health care and best practice aspect, in light of the debate taking place nationwide about health care reform. The senator spent about an hour at the screening site. Charles Stephens, MD, HONU medical director; and Betsy Pieser, HONU project manager, explained the steps participants go through at the screenings. Franken sat down for a few minutes and discussed his own nutrition and fitness challenges with Rebecca Fliszar, HONU dietitian. Franken also met with HONU Lead Medical Director Kevin Graham, MD; HONU Director and Principal Investigator Jeff VanWormer; New Ulm Medical Center President Lori Wightman; and Allina Public Policy and Government Affairs Coordinator Kristi Ryman.
