Jaylin Wong of Burnsville is a Courage Kenny EMPOWER scholar

Burnsville, Minn. 9/13/2017 — Jaylin Wong, who graduated this year from Burnsville High School and is studying nursing at the University of Minnesota, is one of two 2017 EMPOWER Scholarship recipients. EMPOWER scholarships support ethnically diverse students pursue medical or rehabilitation careers.

During high school, Wong volunteered more than 778 hours including more than 450 hours at Fairview Ridges Hospital. She spent most of the time in the birth center and playing healing music. Wong also plays music at church where she has served as a worship and student group leader.

At school, Wong played jazz and orchestral violin. In addition, she played badminton, ran cross country and belonged to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was vice president of the National Honor Society, participated in the Green Team environmental club and volunteered with Brainpower in a Backpack, stuffing backpacks to feed hungry students.

“Jaylin has used her volunteering to express her passions in life, to honor her cultural heritage, and to explore options for the future,” said one of her nominators. “Her values are imbedded in everything she does.”

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute is able to provide the EMPOWER Scholarships because of a gift from the Courage Kenny Foundation’s David M. Hersey Endowment Fund. EMPOWER is an acronym for Encourage Minority Participation in Occupations with Emphasis on Rehabilitation.
