MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. 12/7/2016 — Dr. Mindy Benton, Allina Health Clinics doctor of podiatric medicine and surgery, has been named president of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (ABFAS). ABFAS creates the certification examinations and processes to certify all podiatrists performing foot and ankle surgery in the U.S.

"After five years as a member of the ABFAS board of directors, I'm proud to now serve as its president," said Dr. Benton. "This is an important organization designed to ensure that board-certified surgeons will provide excellent care in the operating room."

Dr. Benton has been involved with the ABFAS, helping to create the first In-Training examination and, more recently, serving as chairperson of the Board Certification Content committee which updated the certification process utilizing computer-based patient simulations, didactic exams, and surgical case reviews.

Dr. Benton received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN, in 1985 and a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from the William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine, Chicago, in 1991. She completed a two-year surgical residency training program at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

Dr. Benton sees patients at the Allina Health Bandana Square and Inver Grove Heights Clinics. In addition to her duties at Allina, Dr. Benton is also the program director for the Podiatric Medicine and Surgery with Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery residency program at Hennepin County Medical Center. She has overseen the training of 28 residents to date, five of whom are fellow Allina podiatric providers.
