Providing support and resources for people with cancer and their loved ones

A cancer diagnosis affects every aspect of your life. At Allina Health, we are committed to providing the highest quality cancer care for you as a whole person—not just treating your cancer, but also addressing your overall wellness.

Oncology social work is the practice of supporting individuals and their families who are experiencing a cancer diagnosis by addressing needs that go beyond medical care. This includes the practical, emotional, social and financial challenges of cancer.

Oncology social work at Allina Health

At Allina Health, your team of oncology social work experts are compassionate, licensed experts who work with you and your family to identify specific needs you may have as a result of your cancer diagnosis and treatment. Together, we find resources and supports that will optimize your well-being and quality of life.

Personalized planning

Your oncology social worker will connect with you and your family, listen to your concerns and help create a personalized plan to support you through your cancer care experience. This support may include information, education and specific resources for areas of your life such as family, spirituality, work, financial matters and mental wellness.

Your support plan could include:

  • connection to support groups, community events and organizations
  • individual or family counseling to help you and your family cope with the emotional side of cancer
  • information and referrals to grief and loss resources
  • support with employment, financial and insurance concerns
  • advanced care planning and the completion of a health care directive
  • referrals to food, transportation, lodging and other community resources

Social work sessions may be a one-time visit or several visits, depending on your needs.
