Vision correction surgery means freedom for busy father of two

Matt Kolb's vision was never horrible, but today it is off the charts. Literally.

After having laser vision correction surgery at Phillips Eye Institute, Kolb's vision has improved to the point where it is better than what the chart in his doctor's office can measure.

The 31-year-old father of two had worn glasses since college. He preferred to wear contact lenses, but constantly dealt with dry eyes. It was difficult to wear contacts for long periods of time. With his active lifestyle, busy career and growing family, wearing contacts became more of a hassle.

He consulted with Keith Carlson, MD, an ophthalmologist with Allina Health clinics in Eagan and Farmington and Claris Eye Care and Surgery. After testing and a discussion about Kolb's needs, Carlson recommended the LASEK procedure, which is similar to LASIK but does not involve cutting a flap in the cornea.

"Dr. Carlson was great about setting expectations and explaining the procedure and recovery process," said Kolb. "He was also readily accessible and the clinic staff was able to schedule me very quickly."

Kolb was glad that the procedure would be done at Phillips Eye Institute. "It's nice to be at an eye hospital. There is a lot of comfort knowing they focus exclusively on eye care."

Kolb had the laser vision correction surgery done on one eye at a time, one week apart. "It went very smoothly. The surgery itself took only a few minutes, and the staff did a great job of keeping you at ease throughout the procedure."

A numbing agent is used on the eye, so the procedure was pain-free. After he went home, he experienced slight irritation in his eye, but that went away within a few days.

After the procedure, his vision improved quickly. "It improved significantly in the first week for each eye," he said. After a month, his vision was 20/20, and after a year, his vision acuity surpassed the vision chart.

"It may sound dramatic to say that this is life-changing surgery, but it's true," said Kolb. "There's a freedom that comes with not wearing glasses or contact lenses. I can wake up in the middle of the night and not struggle to see the clock. I don't need to pack my contact supplies or glasses when I'm traveling. And I can go play with my kids without worrying about my eyes drying out."
