Support of Transportation Services

  • Last year, Phillips Eye Institute provided nearly 6,500 rides to patients coming to the hospital for eye surgery or for a Low Vision Center appointment. In fact, about one in four of our patients depend on this service. Patients have told us that without the Transportation Service, it would be more difficult or even impossible to access the eye care they need; many would delay or cancel necessary appointments or procedures.

    Phillips Eye Institute Foundation is proud to support the Transportation Service, thanks to the generosity of its donors. Through this support, the Transportation Service can be offered to patients who need it at no additional cost to them.

    Joyce’s story

    Joyce NolanWhen Joyce, 76, learned she needed eye surgery, her immediate concern was how she would get to the hospital. “My husband doesn’t drive. My children offered, but I didn’t want to disrupt their lives.” She thought about postponing surgery until the summer when her daughter, a teacher, might be available to drive her.

    When she learned about Phillips Eye Institute’s Transportation Service, the issue was settled. Joyce scheduled her surgery immediately. “It was seamless, all taken care of with just one phone call,” she said. “I was impressed with their attention to detail and care.” 


    Key facts

    • More than 25 percent of Phillips Eye Institute patients use the Transportation Service.
    • In 2014, the Transportation Service provided more than 6,500 rides for patients who needed surgery or who had an appointment in our Low Vision Center.
    • Seventy-two percent of patients who use the Transportation Service are over age 70.
    • In patient satisfaction surveys, 95 percent of patients using the Transportation Service indicated they were highly satisfied with the service.
