Mobility guidelines and home exercise program

  • Self-care Guidelines

You may have precautions to follow after surgery. The following guidelines will help you follow these precautions while doing self-care activities.

    Using the toilet

    • Use a raised toilet seat at home and when visiting family or friends.
    • Use a handicap-accessible bathroom stall when in the community.

    Taking a shower

    • Use a long-handled sponge to wash your feet. Have a member of your care circle help if needed.
    • Put a bath mat or adhesive strips on your shower floor or use a shower chair. This will help reduce your risk of falling.

    Getting dressed

    • Use a reacher to help you put clothes on the lower part of your body.
    • Use a sock aid to help you put on socks without bending.
    • Wear shoes that have arch support, a heel back and nonslip soles. Slip-on shoes are easier to put on. You can use elastic laces to turn a tie shoe into a slip-on shoe.
