The first Friday in February – national Heart Health Month – is traditionally the date of the American Heart Association’s Wear Red Day and hospital staff elected to show solidarity on the issue, joining thousands of others around the country as part of the movement to raise awareness and encourage women to make lifestyle changes to improve cardiac health.

Shari Durch, cardiac rehabilitation coordinator at River Falls Area Hospital, said: “Wearing red is a really simple way we can help get women thinking about their heart health and we hope it encourages women in River Falls to make healthy behavior changes. According to the American Heart Association, one in three women dies from heart disease and stroke every year, but 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.”

Later in the month, River Falls Area Hospital will host a women’s heart health event at which River Falls resident Dawn Huberty will share her powerful personal testimony of complete heart block diagnosis and pacemaker implantation at the age of 27. Cardiac rehabilitation coordinator Shari Durch will also share advice on ways to improve and maintain cardiac health.

The event is free and open to all. It will be held in the classrooms at River Falls Area Hospital from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 19. No registration is required and light refreshments will be served.
