In an effort to encourage patients, employees and those in our communities to dispose of unused prescription drugs properly, Allina Health has partnered with Verde Technologies of Minnetonka, Minnesota to offer an easy way to properly dispose of unused medication.
From mid-September through mid-October, or while supplies last, Allina Health pharmacies will offer patients Deterra™ drug deactivation pouches at no cost. Deterra uses a molecular adsorption technology to neutralize active chemicals in prescription drugs when water is added. A small pouch can deactivate up to 15 pills, 2 ounces of liquid or 2 patches.
"As a health care organization, abuse by youth, and others, of medications not prescribed to them is a growing concern for us,” says Lee Mork, director of Pharmacy, Allina Health Clinics. “Safe disposal of medications, especially opioids, reduces risk of accidental poisoning, theft and drug abuse.”
In accordance with federal regulations, Allina Health facilities are not allowed to take back controlled substance prescription medications
"Providing our communities with a safe and convenient deactivation and disposal solution is extremely important," says John Mulcahy, Verde's vice president of sales. "We’re pleased Allina Health is taking a leadership role by providing Deterra to its patients.”
Deterra™ drug deactivation pouches are available in all Allina Health pharmacies while supplies last.
