Abbott Northwestern will be well represented at anesthesia conference

MINNEAPOLIS 03/30/2016

Researchers at Abbott Northwestern Hospital will present seven studies at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists April 2 to 6 in San Diego. The topics cross multiple disciplines including anesthesia, surgery, perfusion, nursing, care coordination and research analytics.

"First and foremost, we take excellent care of patients, but to be able to report on the many innovative ways we move our respective fields forward is icing on the cake," says Tjorvi E. Perry, MD, Abbott Northwestern's director of Cardiac Anesthesia Services.

The studies represent the work of Perry and multiple physicians, nurses and researchers, and these are the titles:

—Leveraging rapid-cycle formative assessment to improve intraoperative glucose control in cardiac surgical patients

—Improving clinical performance transparency in cardiac anesthesia

—Fast-track general anesthesia for patients undergoing transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement results in shorter intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay and lower cost

—A cardiac surgery-specific, goal-directed algorithm using stroke volume variation results in less variability in intraoperative crystalloid administration

—Patients undergoing transapical mitral valve device placement benefit from a combined fast-track general endotracheal and thoracic epidural anesthetic approach

—A multi-institutional study assessing shared mental models among cardiac surgery disciplines

—Perioperative pain control for transapical transcatheter aortic valve replacement using single-shot paravertebral nerve blocks
