Mary Waters, EMT/first responder for River Falls Ambulance Services, was presented with a plaque at the 40th annual Wisconsin Governor’s Conference on Highway Safety in Green Bay, Wis., on August 27 and 28.
She was nominated by Cyndy Bayer, trauma coordinator at River Falls Area Hospital, who works closely with Waters—an NHTSA certified Child Passenger Safety technician for 11 years—to offer car seat clinics and individual appointments through the hospital to parents to ensure their children are best protected by appropriately fitted and sized car seats.
"Mary has a passion for preventing injuries, especially in children," Bayer wrote in her nomination. "Mary is a calm, steady leader. She continually seeks to improve her knowledge base and inspires others to do the same. Mary was instrumental in developing the car seat safety program in the West Central Regional Trauma Advisory Council. She was able to provide a foundation and her expertise to all the technicians who followed her lead. She continues to collaborate with River Falls Area Hospital, Regions Hospital and the West Central RTAC."
Motor vehicle crashes continue to be the number one cause of death and fatalities of children. Child passenger safety advocates promote the safe transportation of children by using child restraints and educating parent/caregivers on using car seats and boosters correctly.
