Owatonna Hospital Lab receives accreditation from college of American Pathologists

OWATONNA, Minn. 06/02/2014

Owatonna Hospital Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.

The Lab's director, Mark A. Arnesen, MD, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. Owatonna Hospital Lab is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide. Being CAP-accredited allows Owatonna Hospital's Lab to become part of the Allina Health medical labs system.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or stricter than the government's own inspection program.

"We strive to provide quality service in every aspect of what we deliver to our patients" said Sandra Otterbein, Hospital Lab Manager. "We feel that holding ourselves to the highest standards of laboratory practice is an integral part of our operations"

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality of control of procedures for the past two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, as well as the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record, in addition to the overall management of the laboratory. This strict inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients.
