New Health Powered Kids™ program available to public for free

MINNEAPOLIS 04/05/2013

Health Powered Kids™, a new online educational resource by Allina Health, designed to empower children ages 3-14 to make healthier choices about eating, exercising, keeping clean and managing stress, is now available to the public.

Watch the video explaining more about what Health Powered Kids is.

Allina Health is rolling out a program to help kids get healthy and maintain active lifestyles. FOX 9's Karen Scullin talked to Susan Nygaard, RN, manager of community health improvement, Allina Health, about New Health Powered Kids™.

At-home lessons for families:

The website, healthpoweredkids.org, provides free, easy-to-use information about health and fitness. It features more than 50 lessons and activities for children to learn from teachers, school staff, homeschool educators, daycare providers, community groups and parents. Each lesson also includes a take-home newsletter that provides fun activities for families to do at home.

"In addition to our tried and true exercise and nutrition lessons, we're also helping parents and teachers talk about stress management and hygiene," says Susan Nygaard, RN, Allina Health manager of community health improvement. "This fills a major need in the community. We need to look holistically at children's health - we know all these areas have a direct impact on how children learn and live a balanced life.

To get feedback on the program, Allina Health has been piloting Health Powered Kids™ in 10 schools that were chosen as School Health Connection™ winners in 2012. The feedback from the schools has been positive.

"I started using the exercises on Health Powered Kids to help my class burn off a little extra energy and refocus during the long afternoons," said Erin Cramer, a third-grade teacher at Park Brook Elementary in Brooklyn Park, Minn. "By accessing the website directly from my classroom, the kids can see the visuals right on the board. They love it."

Health Powered Kids™ by Allina Health offers lessons for teachers, parents and community programs to guide children ages 3-14 on important health topics.

Health Powered Kids™ evolved from the past Allina Health program Power by the Hour™, which was developed in collaboration with Anoka-Hennepin School District. Power by the Hour™ has been discontinued with the launch of Health Powered Kids™.
