After their mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, sisters Diana Witt and Emily Yund learned firsthand about the challenges of coping with a serious illness in the family.
That made launching a fundraising effort in support of families served by the Piper Breast Center a natural step for them.
“While insurance covers a good portion of the care, there are a lot of things that fall through the cracks,” said Witt. “We met so many women and families going through this. We wanted to make sure other families would have resources to help them.”
It began with Posing for Pink. The two sisters orchestrated the annual production and sale of a calendar that featured many of their friends and family members, beautifully designed and tastefully photographed. Then they decided to expand their efforts and started the Posing FORE Pink Breast Cancer Golf Tournament. All proceeds are donated to Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation’s Breast Cancer Patient Emergency Assistance Fund.
The event is held each June at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker, Minn. “When we started, we didn’t know anything about hosting a golf tournament; we all just dove in,” explained Witt. Members of their extended family also pitch in, and it’s added a new level of connectedness to an already close-knit family. “Being involved in something like this gives you a sense of purpose and something to be proud of,” she said.
The Breast Cancer Patient Emergency Assistance Fund is designed to help families in need get help quickly, with a minimum of red tape. The Foundation is grateful to the many organizations that support the Emergency Assistance Fund and Piper Breast Center with generous donations throughout the year as a result of golf tournaments, music festivals and other special events.
