Bone density - DXA

The bone densitometry service for Unity Hospital is located in ambulatory care at Unity Hospital. The service is available Monday through Friday, with early morning and evening appointments available.

DXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), which is the "gold standard" procedure for measuring bone density, uses two beams of x-ray to measure bone structure deep within soft tissue, usually the hip and the spine. DXA only exposes the patient to 1/20 the radiation of a routine chest x-ray and far less than full dental X-rays.

The technologists that perform the DXA exams are all registered radiological technologists, certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, who specialize only in bone densitometry. A radiologist from Suburban Radiology Consultants interprets all exams. Results of the exam are sent to your physician.

Pre-procedure preparation

There is no preparation for this examination. You may go about normal daily activities. Eating, drinking and taking medications will not affect the results of the exam. However, it is recommended not to take calcium supplements the day of the exam.

Procedure

The test takes approximately 45 minutes. You will be instructed by the technologist to lie still on a table while images are being captured.

Post-procedure

There are no side effects with this exam. You may resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. Your physician will receive the results and notify you within one week.
