Our history

St. Luke's Hospital, early 1900's

In 1855, following the death of his own daughter, the Reverend John V. Van Ingen proposed the construction of Christ Church Orphan's Home and Hospital. The hospital opened in 1857. In 1877 the Church Hospital moved into a new building and the name was changed to Saint Luke's Hospital. Five years later, Saint Luke's moved to Smith Avenue in Saint Paul.

Miller Hospital, 1925

In 1961, Saint Luke's opened its award-winning cloverleaf-designed nursing units. In 1972, Saint Luke's and nearby Charles T. Miller Hospital consolidated to form United Hospital, using the physical campus of Saint Luke's and the human resources of both hospitals.

In 1976, ground was broken for a new United Hospital facility, designed to share a number of services with Children's Hospital. Riverview Memorial Hospital merged with United in 1979, and in 1980, the newly constructed medical center, United Hospital and Children's Health Care - St. Paul, was dedicated.

US News & World Report 'Best Hospitals'
U.S. News & World Report recognized United Hospital as a top-ranked hospital in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area in its Best Hospitals metro-area rankings in 2011. United was also recognized for 10 high-performing specialties (cancer; diabetes and endocrinology; gastroenterology; geriatrics, gynecology; nephrology; neurology and neurosurgery; orthopedics; pulmonology and urology).

Chest Pain Center Accreditation
United Hospital received designation as an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers in 2011. The accreditation recognizes the collaboration and commitment to rigorous and peer reviewed processes proven to reduce mortality and morbidity from heart disease.

Lactation Care Excellence Award
United Hospital received the International Board Certified Lactation Consultants award for excellence in lactation care in 2011. The award recognizes activities that help protect, promote, and support breastfeeding including staffing certified lactation consultants and providing a lactation program that is available 5-7 days a week. Commission on Cancer, Outstanding Achievement Award
United Hospital received this award, which recognizes programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients, for 2010 and 2007.

Breast Center Accreditation
The Breast Center at United Hospital earned a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers in 2010. Learn more at The Breast Center.

Heart Failure Certification, The Joint Commission
United Hospital was granted Disease-Specific Certification in Heart Failure from The Joint Commission in 2010. This certificate of distinction recognizes hospitals that are making exceptional efforts to foster better quality care and outcomes for patients with heart failure.

Diabetes Certification, The Joint Commission
United Hospital earned the Certification of Distinction for its inpatient diabetes care from The Joint Commission, a national hospital accreditation agency, in 2010.

Magnet Recognition Program™, The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) granted Magnet Recognition Program™ status to United Hospital in 2009. The ANCC states that Magnet hospitals consistently deliver better patient outcomes than non-Magnet hospitals, including more time spent at the patient’s bedside by nurses, shorter lengths of patient stay, lower patient mortality rates, higher patient satisfaction rates, and higher nurse retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction rates.

Accredited Pain Center
United Pain Center is the only program in the state of Minnesota to be accredited by the American Academy of Pain Management.
