From heart attacks to tornado victims, patients who come to the Emergency Department at United Hospital can be assured they will receive safe, high-quality care day and night.

Board-certified emergency physicians provide emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Emergency medical services at the new Peter J. King Emergency Care Center include:

• 27 private examination rooms, designed to prevent cross-infection and cross contamination
• Six secure, separate psychiatric rooms for improved patient safety
• 12 observation rooms
• A large ambulance bay that can hold more than six ambulances
• A decontamination area for instances of biologic, chemical or radiation exposure
• In-department computed tomography (CT) device for faster imaging and diagnoses
• Private patient care and family areas

Emergency care

The Peter J. King Emergency Care Center offers emergency medical programs, disaster preparedness, advanced technology and community education efforts together under one state-of-the-art facility. The department has been designed to manage biologic, chemical and mass casualty incidents.

Advanced triage services

Triage is the process by which medical staff sort patients based on the urgency of their health care needs.

The Center’s advanced triage has patients being seen by a physician’s assistant or registered nurse upon arrival. Patients are then placed in an examination room for registration and examination thus reducing wait time.

Computed tomography

A computed tomography (CT) scan is an imaging method that uses x-rays to create cross-sectional pictures of the body.

Imaging capabilities

A computed tomography scanning device located within the Emergency Care Center allows patients to be diagnosed faster and treatment to begin more quickly.

Enhanced privacy and safety

Each examination room can be fully enclosed for improved privacy for our patients. Consultation rooms for families are available.

In addition, there are six, private, secured rooms that are dedicated to patients with mental health concerns to improve both their safety and the safety of others.

The care team

The Peter J. King Emergency Care Center at United Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the Twin Cities to be exclusively staffed 24 hours a day by full-time, board-certified emergency department physicians and highly trained emergency care nurses and staff. You can be assured your health is in good hands.

• difficulty breathing
• severe eye injuries
• carbon monoxide exposure
• sudden blindness

• suicidal behavior

The ER is open 24 hours a day and accepts all patients.
