Application process

We appreciate your interest in the United Family Medicine Residency Program and look forward to the opportunity to meet you and your family members and to provide you with a more thorough look at our program. Our formal interview process (November through January) will ensure access to our residents, program director, faculty, and facilities. We invite you to spend an informal evening with our residents and their family members and to explore housing and job placement opportunities for your spouse or significant other during your visit.

For our traveling applicants, we are pleased to provide the cost of an overnight accommodation. We also encourage you to become more acquainted with our program by taking time to visit for a more laid-back, informal look at our program at any time during the year, as well. (However, a formal interview must be scheduled for consideration in the Match process.)

Applicants are invited to schedule an optional dinner and second-look visit as meets their needs in finalizing the decision-making process. If you are interested in any of these invitations, please feel free to give us a call.

Applications submitted for the formal interview process will be reviewed by our admissions committee and, upon approval, applicants will be notified whether they have been selected to participate in the interview process.

Incomplete applications will be reviewed only upon receipt of all required documentation.

Applicants should submit the following materials for interview consideration:

A complete ERAS application, including:

• Personal statement
• CV
• Dean’s letter
• USLME and/or COMLEX transcript
• Three letters of recommendation - one of which is from a Family Physician
• Photograph
• U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. The program does not sponsor visas.
• Applicants transferring from another residency program must provide a Letter of Reference from the Program Director of the most recent residency program
• Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last five years or have been working as a physician within the last three years. Applicants must have a minimum of six months of U.S. clinical experience. Research does not qualify as clinical experience.
• A valid ECFMG certificate, with a passing score on the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) exam.
• Applicants must pass the USLME Step 1 and Step 2 exams with a maximum of two unsuccessful attempts on each USLME exam. Ability to complete USLME Step 3 within seven years of passing the first USLME exam.
• Applicants must be eligible for full, unrestricted licensure in the State of Minnesota.
• All interviews are subject to invitation by the residency program. There is no guarantee that in meeting the application requirements, an applicant will receive an interview due to the number of applications received and due to the number of available positions in the training program.
