These may include development of routines/habits and other compensatory techniques to enhance independence and safety skills, driving assessment and community mobility needs.
Occupational therapists will provide follow-up treatment, if indicated, including education for clients and their caregivers on life management strategies that address their individual needs.
Where is CPT offered?
Patients need a referral order for Occupational Therapy: Cognitive Performance Testing (CPT) from their health care provider.
Cognitive Performance Testing (CPT)
What is CPT?
As we age, both physical and mental capacities can be affected. CPT provides factual information to individuals and their families about thinking and processing skills important for independent living.
CPT is a standardized, occupational therapy assessment that is used to explain, predict and track a client's capacity to function in activities of daily living.
It differs from a traditional occupational therapy assessment, which highlights specific tasks that the individual can/can not perform.
CPT focuses on the cognitive skills of working memory and executive skills that underlie functional performance and deficits.
Therapists observe clients' performance on tasks that include new learning, as well as familiar everyday tasks such as setting up medications, getting information over the phone and using money to purchase a familiar item.
Who can benefit?
CPT is appropriate for individuals who have a diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment and/or dementia. Caregivers are encouraged to attend the session with the client and are included in the review of test results.
The client, family members and referring provider will receive a report with a functional level score that can help predict and guide supervision and assistance needs.
Informational handouts will be shared with clients and family members. These will include recommendations regarding supervision needs and the most effective way to provide cues and direction.
What resources are available?
Sister Kenny will connect clients and their families to Allina's care navigation professionals, who will help them access appropriate services within their local communities, such as support groups, day programs, educational opportunities and assistive devices.
